Hi Chris
Bad enough Hermes is after my microwave flax seed bag, let alone the hissing
from my slippers, now you want me to JINGLE as well? Come on, consider the
poor medics, who would have to remove all those chains before they could
resuscitate me! On the other hand, if I could guarantee a few hairy chest
males, why would I complain about jingling!

Tub problems

2006-11-28 14:59:03

Petra,
I can relate so well to your tub story! It is so good that we can laugh at
these stupid problems since they are incredibly frustrating experiences at
the time.
I have another one for you. I was cleaning the tub and couldn't quite reach
the other side very well, so I stepped into the tub to continue scrubbing the
far side of the tub. As I stepped back out onto the bathroom floor my feet,
now coated on the bottom with cleaner decided to go in opposite directions.
It's that last fleeting thought that goes through your mind as you start to
go down that says something like
"Oh, (place your own explative here)! This is gonna hurt!" One foot ended up
wedged between the tub and the toilet the other foot underneath me. There was
nothing for me to grab onto to pull up! I was stuck sitting there next to the
tub. My next thought was surprise "Hey, I'm ok! Nothing hurts too badly".
Fortunately my son who was around age 13 or 14 at the time heard me fall and
immediately came running to see if I was ok. I told him I was ok but that I
was stuck. The next thing I know, this kid has his hands in my armpits and
just lifts me straight up like I was only two years old! I was so shocked at
how incredibly strong he was. I won't tell what I weigh here but I am not one
of those anorexic super model types either. Since then he has gotten a lot
taller and has started weight lifting classes this year in school. I don't
know what I am going to do when he leaves for college in 2 1/2 years. He's my
jar opener, grocery boy, lightbulb changer,....... He's such a great kid!

The Down Under gang

2006-11-27 23:31:09

Hi all --
Stace points out that there are not many people in New
Zealand w/ PA -- actually, I thought there weren't
many people in NZ PERIOD! But her comment prompted me
to scour the roster of members to see who I could find
from "down under," and I came up with 11, listed
below.
I cover both NZ and AU, though of course they are not
the same country they are a lot closer to each other
than either are to North America, South Africa, the
Canary Islands, the Netherlands, Brazil, Ireland, or
any of the other places represented by people on this
list.
Cheers!

ticking

2006-11-27 02:22:29

Here's a new treatment for my friend Gastroparesis:
(BTW..if you are on narcotic painkillers you are at greater risk of
gastroparesis because of how the narcotics slow the stomach!)
Some Gastroparesis patients are currently using PACEMAKERS
in their stomachs! So far the trial participants seem to be improved
with this technique.
SOOOO....now I will avoid stairs, cigarette smoke, snow and ice
as well as microwave ovens. (microwaves can disrupt
pacemakers). So as if I didn't already have a lot in common with
my 80+ year old friends at the rehab pool, we can now discuss the
latest in pacemaker technology.
Gee Gill, you can hiss and I can tick, who else wants to join the
band?

Update

2006-11-24 21:53:33

Hi All
Well I have had an exhausting day today.
BECKY, you know the road on "The Ring of Kerry" collapsed into the sea, well
I was ON it at 7pm tonight and again at 9pm, boy it's UNSAFE! Well I thought
the road just slid down the side of the Mountain into the sea. Yes folks in
this part of Ireland we loose a few meters of road every year. Anyway it
seems that the mountain slid onto the road, which then caused the road to
fall into the sea. Somewhere ON the mountain side was a man in his digger,
he ended up hanging onto a tree branch, while his digger is now in the
Atlantic Ocean! Bad enough doing this trip in my little lightweight car, BUT
Becky you will be in a BIG heavy COACH! My advice, bring a life jacket just
in case. Perhaps an inflatable dingy and a parachute! You can never be
toooooo careful!
So I was up at 8am, walked Hermes and my Cousin to the hospital. She
departed to see her father and I continued my walk. I got home, threw myself
into bed, when Mom shouted that Nora had arrived. So my nap was also cut
somewhat short! I then did the weekly grocery shopping, dropped Nora and
daughter off at the hospital, before coming home and cooking a chicken
curry, batli, with batsimi rice and nann bread. Having polished that off, of
course Hermes had her little bit, we then hit the road for Carchiveen, the
Ring of Kerry, in the DARK! It take one hour to get their, twenty minutes
for a cup of tea, before heading home.
Then the telephone has been hopping since.
My Uncle Stan according to Aunt Nora is "Not toooooo good, but not toooooo
bad!" See more Irish Logic! If he dies they will ALL say he looks WELL in
his coffin, figure that one out!
They think this time he has sustained some damage to his heart, so are
thinking about sending him to Cork Hospital for a angioplasty, once he has
got over this problem, or is well enough to undergo this procedure.
NOW IF I can stay awake for another hour, I will hit the chat room at
about.com as I could do with a laugh!
Love and God Bless
Gillian

Welcome to the two newbies who recently posted asking for help

2006-11-24 17:44:59

Welcome to the newbies who posted recently asking for help and feedback.
First of all, I want say that you can glean a lot of info from our archives
which you can find at our one list site. You can also get a lot of good info
and links to good sites on PA from the PA website that Robert Harris one of
our members set up as an adjunct to this list. I will give you the links
below to both.
Depending on the severity of your PA at this point, there is kind of a step
ladder of immune supressants that docs start you out on when you are
diagnosed with PA. There are also a few on our site who use natural methods
with varying results.
A list of what I have seen from my own experience as immune suppresant drugs
from weakest to strongest is below:
Azulfidine (a sulfa drug)
Plaquenil (an anti malarial)
Methotrexate
Imuran
Neoral aka Cyclosporin
Enbrel (a biologic - not a chemical- brand new)
Arava
Prosorba Column (a medical procedure using
an enbrel type drug I believe)
Someone on the list has used at least one if not all of these meds- me for
instance- I have used or tried them all.
I am currently taking Arava and Imuran.
Keep asking specific questions and you will get answers as best we can!
Welcome again.

thick ears Gill?

2006-11-23 22:39:41

Oh, Gillian. Now since you have been emailing me and I'm a Pat you must have
matching well balanced thick ears. I have good news. Sis, 35yo elementary school
teacher had her first baby early this morning. She was going to work until the
end of the week because the baby was due around the 22nd. I guess your talk of
watering the baby's head at the baby shower this weekend worked. Did I tell you
the baby receieved four baby bathtubs? This will be one clean child. The trip
was long and fast. If I had known the baby was coming out so soon I would have
stayed. Of course, if I had she would have stayed waiting for me to leave. Good
thing she went into labor during the night or the little kids would have gotten
a very good education about the birds and bees. I wish your Uncle a safe speedy
recovery.
I've had two days of dragging around and burning hip joints from the drive. When
will travel be as easy as "beam me up, Scotty."?

Vacine for Arthritis

2006-11-23 19:12:41

Hi All
BBC Radio 4 had the Science at 9 program on last night, about "autoimmunity"
Now the Immunologists have picked up on the American Indians. Seems that
some plant in America can give you a nasty rash if you come in contact with
it. However the Indians soon found, that if they ATE a small piece of this
plants leaf, they failed to come out in any rash, if they then came in
contact with the plant! So last night I listened and recorded this program
on autoimmunity.
In rheumatoid arthritis, the T lymphocytes attack the collagen in the joint.
The immunologist decided to see if the above could work in the arthritic
disease activity. We are all exposed to bugs, or 'antigens' via our nose,
the food we eat; some of which finds its way to the blood stream and so on.
The inability of the T lymphocytes to recognise type two collagen as being
part of the joint, sets up the inflammation, swollen joint and pain.
Therefore they decided to manufacture pills, which contain type two
collagen. They made these pills in three different strengths, plus a placebo
pill and set up a trial. After three months, patients on the placebo did not
improve. Patients on the higher and lower dose of the type two collagen did
not improve, but the patients on the middle dose, got their lives back! One
small problem, they do NOT know why the strength should have any bearing on
the regain of mobility! The theory? By ingesting this type two collagen,
which eventually finds its way via the stomach/intestine to the blood
stream, the T lymphocytes are kept BUSY attacking it IN the blood stream,
thereby leaving the joints alone!
They took this research to some medical centre in USA; I think where Elvis
lived, and asked them to refine this type two collagen. All they want is the
DNA strands. The next step will be injecting this type two collagen DNA into
patients, which should have the same affect as a vaccine! For patients with
arthritis, well they will have to receive this injection every three months,
but that will keep the T lympocytes busy so they will not attack the type
two collagen in the joints. Meanwhile they are 'hoping' that the T
lymphocytes will also LEARN to accept the injection, or type two collagen,
thereby stopping the disease process and being a final cure for this
condition.
They are also trying the same theory on patients with MS!
So their you are, food for thought!
Love and God Bless
Gillian

What is Sex?

2006-11-21 10:19:33

Hi April
Well now Gal, as my favourite pet Bunny rabbit told me, "What's up Doc, SEX
is just one thing on top of another!" However, my Mom said Sex is like
shopping in the supermarket, "All that pushing and shoving and still nothing
to show for it!"
Then when the HIV/AIDS scene hit, well I was told I had to be careful. So I
had my questions ready. "Are you promiscuous, have you recently been in
Africa and do you take precautions?"
He replied, "NO!", "NO!" "I am just here to repair the washing machine!"
Love and God Bless

talking w/ my doctor

2006-11-21 00:19:42

Hi everbody' it's Nancy with a comment, a question, and a funny.
Yesterday I had a visit to the rheum, who really only spoke to his med
student till I mentioned to him that I was the patient, and would really
appreciate just a moment or 2 of his time. He turned really red, and the
student almost laughed, but it did get me just a minute, but still did not
respond to my specific questions. Considering that I was a critical care
nurse for 20 years, and am able to condense my complaints into a pretty
logical and time effecient manner that does not waste any of their precious
time, I can't accept md's who will not take the time to listen to what you
have to say, so I think I will go doc shopping for a new one. He also told
his student that PA differs from RA in that you get none of the systemic
problems ( like fatigue or multi joint pain- attributes that to depression)
??????? any comments??????? I also mentioned to them that getting "down"
is unavoidable sometimes, when symptoms are particularly bad, is not
necessarily 'depression'
Anyway--- channged my nsaid to VIOX to try------ has anyone taking it
had any problem with fluid retention? Somewhere I thought I read that, but
for the life of me cannot find where now.
Thanks for all the suggestions about jaw pain- I am well armed to meet
the dentist again as well.
Thought this was cute:
Computer Genders
A college professor, who was previously in the Navy, was very aware that
ships are addressed as, "she" and "her." He often wondered what gender
computers should be addressed. To answer that question, he set up two groups
of computer experts.
The first was comprised of women and the second of men. Each group was
asked to recommend whether computers should be referred to in the
feminine gender, or the masculine gender. They were asked to give four
reasons for their recommendation.
The group of women reported that the computers should be masculine
because:
1. In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on.
2. They have tons of data, but are still clueless.
3. They are suppossed to help you solve problems, but half the time they are
the problem.
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that, if you had waited a
little longer, you could have had a better more powerful model.
The men, on the other hand, concluded that computers should be feminine
because:
1. No one but the Lord God Himself understands their logic.
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is
incomprehensible to everyone else.
3. Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for later
retrieval.
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half
your paycheck on accessories for it.
Great day to everybody ! Luv from Northlands Nancy

Weight Gain and Enbrel

2006-11-20 17:09:25

According to my NYC rheumatologist, a few case of weight gain (from carb
craving) have been reported with the use of Enbrel. The Enbrel is an
anti-TNF drug, and somehow TNF itself plays a role in a "wasting away"
syndrome. Instead of wasting away (losing weight) Enbrel can upset your
normal chemistry and you will gain with the carbo cravings. That is the best
I can explain.
I stopped Enbrel after 4 weeks because of a 20 lb weight gain- and I got only
moderate results.

Tooth Pain

2006-11-20 12:15:19

Hi April
Been their, did that, refuse to do it again!
I went to the Dentist because I had toothache! He examined the tooth, even
prodded it, plus blew cold air all over it and a big fat ZERO! No decay, no
problem with the gum, no sign of anything, but I could still feel the pain!
I felt a TWIT, but again I would have sworn on the Bible that I had a hole
in my tooth!
Yes I too have a gold crown and yes that can be sore, sensitive, even pain?
I also grind my teeth! They can tell by the angle of wear on your teeth if
you grind them!
As to "arthritis of the tooth?" Trouble is when the PA flares, everything
becomes sore and dealing with the pain exhausts you. Then once exhausted,
even a small pin prick seems like a knife incision. It is a vicious circle
that once you are in it hard to get out of!
I am NOT myself at the moment due to my Frozen Shoulder and the PAIN! The
pain does not rest up for sleep, is akin to a big black RAT gnawing at my
shoulder 24 hours a day! I failed to have any meaningful sleep last night.
Mom took off early tonight, because my nocturnal wanderings kept her awake
and we have been screaming at each other all day! Then I made the dinner,
opened up some aluminium foil to use and gave my finger a papercut. Swear I
had impaled my finger on the carving knife, the pain was so intense.
Hopefully I will knock myself out tonight with my mallet, at least have some
rest, so tomorrow should be a PLACID day, temper wise!
Love and God Bless
Gillian

Tempurpedic Mattress

2006-11-20 05:54:31

Hi April
Talking about beds that eat you, I had a interesting experience on my
initial admission to Hospital.
As I was an EMERGENCY admission, they had no plans, let alone beds on the
arthritis ward to put me in!
So they put me in a PRIVATE Room, reserved for Private Medical Health
Insurance Patients and gave me a mattress that VIBRATED! I was in the
wheelchair at this stage, so I assume they thought a vibrating mattress
would stop and bed sores erupting. I was exhausted anyway so asked to be
assisted to bed, whereupon they gave me the control pad and emergency call
button. Well being as I was NOT paying for this vibrating luxury, thought I
might as well try it! So I hit the on button and Geeeeeeee, I could get real
use to this vibrating rolling bed, as I laid their thinking pleasant
thoughts about men, sunsets and beaches. Then I suddenly woke out of my
daydream, to realise I was going down! Yes already the lower legs were
hanging out over the end of the bed and I was trying backstroke to get back
to my pillow! The help button was also now out of reach! I recall laying
there thinking, "Death by Mattress", which I decided would be located on my
Death Cert! By the time a Nurse arrived, all below the waist was now hanging
over the end of the bed. They also decided to MOVE me, put me in a
conventional bed, as it was obvious that I could NOT behave myself!
I was glad that the end of the bed did not face the window, as I was on the
top floor, some drop if I had vibrated out of that one!
Love and God Bless

tooth pain

2006-11-20 03:57:36

I too suffer from tooth pain on one particular tooth..and I NEVER
associated this with my pa...now I am thinking ??? The tooth is a
molar...had a root canal and a crown...(last year)..at times the tooth
(gum) hurts like a cavity when you were young..I always pop tylenol and
wait it out...I never had any jaw problems...just this one tooth..I told
the dentist and he didn't seem to think anything was wrong. I have
often thought about just having it pulled, but the crown cost me near
$800.00. Now that I think about it, it really does feel like arthritis
of the gum...never knew there was such a thing. It really, really
hurts..and then I get one of my famous headaches...which now a days, are
a daily episode.

Tooth Problems

2006-11-19 18:26:49

April asked if anyone else had problems with their teeth. Odd
you should bring this up as I never once considered there could
be any link to the PA....hmmmm.
I too have had problems recently. Pain that was thought to be
from an abscessed widsom tooth. Got it pulled but the crown in
front of the wisdom tooth cracked and ached and had to be
replaced. Then the terrible jaw popping started. Could hardly
open my mouth.
Sent to a TMJ specialist and I have to say he made me a new mouth
guard that is wonderful! Much thinner and smaller than the one I
wore for years from the dentist and much, much easier to wear.
Then I started developing horrible mouth sores from whatever, but
the trauma of all the dental work sure did not help any!
TMJ doctor has given me a three month reprieve on any work, since
I was improving with just the one applicance and was ready to
kill anyone else who bothered my mouth anymore...just major
burnout! The mouth sores are clearing up...taking lots of folic
acid, vitamin b's and not letting anyone prowl around inside my
mouth for a much needed rest!
I do think that PA's might be more prone to jaw problems such as
TMJ and may grind their teeth because we are not resting well to
begin with and in pain. You might not be aware that you are
grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw at night. I would
advise that you go to a TMJ specialist only because they make a
much better mouth guard than the huge, thick ones most dentists
will give you. Medical insurance will pay for this if your
rheumie gives you the referral for possible TMJ..arthritis
related. Another good reason to see the TMJ
specialist..insurance!
Good luck...I know how tiring all this dental work and pain can
be!
Linda

[RE]Tooth pain?

2006-11-18 22:52:10

Dear April,
You must forgive me but I laughed myself silly when I
read your mails. You did not stick, by any chance,
your head in the microwave while removing the blue
glue and thereby did something to your tooth?
But seriously, I'm sorry you have so much toothtrouble
(psoriatic teeth, maybe you invented a new disease).
Have they never given you a short antibiotic treatment?
Maybe you should change your dentist.
I hope you will sort out your problem soon and don't
loose your super sense of humour!
Greetings.
Margaretha.

I do not usually have problems talking about 'intimate details', [see some

the quilt off me as well!

Tooth pain?

2006-11-18 05:58:19

I have been having the da***dest time with one of my teeth. Wonder if
anyone else has similar experience.
History -
One of my bottom molars started hurting about a year ago - chewing and
temperature sensativity - it had a very old filling in it and my dentist
examined it and recommended a whole gold crown because of the extent of the
decay and my tooth possibly being weak and needing the support - so we
started that process...
Removed the filling
Took impression for gold crown
Put in temp crown
Put in gold crown
still hurt
Adjusted gold crown for better bite
Still hurt
Adjusted gold crown again
Still hurt
Referred to endodontist for root canal
Did root canal - endodontist said we did it "just in time" because he could
see that the tissue was very inflamed and starting to deteriorate.
Still hurt
Saw dentist again to remove plug put in by endodontist and then remove old
gold crown (because it had been adjusted so many times that it was a little
thin and not up to the dentist's standards)
Took another impression for new gold crown
Put in new temporary crown
Still hurt
Adjusted temporary Crown
Still hurts - this is where I am today
Dentist doesnt want to put in new gold crown until the tooth doesnt hurt
anymore (would be nice!) but she says the next step would be to get some
rubber thing to put in my mouth while I sleep to stop me grinding my teeth
at night - which I don't know if I do. I have enough trouble sleeping at
all without some *&^% thing in my mouth!
Somehow, this doesn't seem the right approach. Because I never had hurting
in my mouth from teeth grinding before. My theory is that I did need my
filling replaced and I did need a crown but that the continued inflammation
down in the tooth is related to my PA - that it is like when I sprained my
ankle and then developed really bad PA in the ankle after that. The tooth
got inflamed from "natural causes" and now it is chronically inflamed
because I now have "arthritis of the tooth."
Anybody else have this? I am so annoyed because I don't even have a nerve
root in this tooth anymore and it still hurts. Not to mention I haven't
been able to chew on that side of my mouth for a year and I have lost count
of the number of office visits - not to mention the bills!
-April

Your Father's loveletters

2006-11-17 18:52:25

For everyone's enjoyment:www.fathersloveletter.com/preview.html

Thank you, Robert!

2006-11-17 16:22:42

Robert, thank you for echoing what I think and what I have said here
before. I hate that word "diet" and have always used the term "lifestyle
change." Fortunately, I never did get caught up in that diet yo-yo thing.
When I realized a few years back that I had to do something, I first set out
to create new, good habits. And I did not limit that to what I was eating
but also what I was doing with my life in general. I did not quit anything
cold turkey or start anything head first. I gradually cut out certain foods
and added better ones, and I also took my time finding the types of
activities I would like doing. I tried everything, and some things
stuck...other's didn't. But I did not set goals. All I did was create a
mind set that even the smallest changes in the present would look so much
bigger in the future when I look back on them. Of course, I was right!
There is no better esteem lifter, either, than looking back and realizing
that your accomplishments were indeed that...your OWN accomplishments. It
gives you that drive to keep going. I never settle on one thing, and that
is the story of my life. I decide to do things from one day to the
next..much to the chagrin of my mother! (See, she is one of these mother's
who likes to talk about the things her children are doing, and she can't say
much about me except that I just do my own thing). So, I think in general,
losing weight and getting healthy doesn't stop at your eating habits. We
all know that a positive attitude and over-all well being goes a long way.

While trying to locate a supplier of my egg crate mattress overlay, I did
read about these mattresses.
I understand they wrap themselves around your body. Unfortunately I
purchased a orthopaedic bed when we moved home, less than two years ago, so
have a few years to wait before the mattress will need replacing.

Telephone Bill!

2006-11-17 04:03:43

Hi All
Now talk about the Y2K bug.
The two monthly telephone bill arrived today, while I was in the cloakroom.
Mom opened it and HIT THE ROOF! I asked her how much my Internet was, she
shouted it out, then I asked her how much it was to talk with my sister in
Dubai, she shouted it out? Odd because both charges were the usual, yet
according to Mom the telephone bill was DOUBLE what we usually have???
When I came out Mom was doing the Mothering bit, ranting, raving and about
to disconnect ME from the Internet and throw the PC OUT! I looked at the
bill, did my mental calculations and the BILL did NOT add up????
They had a BWF balance, from November, which I had PAID! I calmly said to
Mom, "Did you keep the ATM receipts from the Machine that I got on 31st
December?" Mom dug them out, and according to THAT, the cheque for the
November bill, dated 2/12/99, hit and CLEARED the Bank on 23rd December! So
I telephoned account enquires, bearing in mind we are now on 1st February!
They still have the November bill outstanding! I retorted, "I assume this is
the Y2K bug!" The girl replied, "No I do not think so, I have flagged it and
Credit Control will contact you!" Suffice to say Credit Control have NOT
been in contact!
I would not mind sooooo much, but when dealing with elderly people, I think
it is unfair to send out bills like this, without checking first. It HAS to
be the telephone companies fault, as the cheque cleared my Bank on 23rd
December.
Give us a Job I could do that!
Love and God Bless
Gillian

I have no qualms about meeting you, but the arrangements will have to be
sorted. I am due to have my Frozen Shoulder de-iced, when I do not know! I
was hoping it would be soon, but knowing what goes on here, I could be
waiting until JUNE! Then the St.Patrick's Day Celebrations will start 16th
March, last four days and nights in Dublin.
I am sure we can arrange a meeting, for all I know you could end up in my

Welcome newest members and hello again to all!

2006-11-16 14:56:43

Hi all, I am still on "modified bed rest" for the herniated disc and impinged
nerve root in my lower back. The nerve pain down my right leg on the outside
of the bone is still really bad. Sleeping is very difficult. Friends and
hubby have been wonderful picking up the slack for the last two weeks, so I
cannot complain there.
God is good.
I am incredibly having a PA flare even though I am on 20 mg of Arava along
with 150 mg of Imuran a day! I also took predisone for seven days last week.
Now I seem to be having a rebound pain reaction in the back and leg, even
though I tapered the Predisone as directed. Oh well.
Of all places, I fell in front of the four seasons hotel in Boston on my way
to "high tea". The doormen had allowed limos and jaguars and the like to park
helter skelter all over the sidewalk, and so we had to walk around the outer
edge nearest the street. In addition (unbeknownst to me at the time) the
bric a brac around the base of the fancy flowering trees was busted up
(probably from cars running it over!). This is why I twisted my ankle and
went down hard- gravel in the right hand, a large two inch diameter hole in
the knee, etc...
Right now the doc says waiting is best- 90% of the time the back pain
resolves with rest. I pray I am not in the 10% who get surgery. I would be
concerned about infections since I am on two immunosupressants right now.
I will keep you posted, all.
I think it is fantastic that most everyones spirits are up, c0nsidering we
are in the middle of the cold winter here!
I was first hit with the PA when I was around 15- but not diagnosed until
around age 30. It is typical to go for a long time undiagnosed or
misdiagnosed with PA.
I would highly recommend the NPF website for a full description of the five
kinds of PA. You can get to it by visiting our own website and clicking onto
the link for the NPF there.

Thankfully I no longer have the roller coaster ride with the health, but I
have been their. Earlier on I would return from College at 4.30pm Tuesday,
tell Mom I was going for a nap, and woke 9am THURSDAY!
I am glad I managed to get a handle on this seesaw, cannot recall the last
time I spent so long asleep.
I did ask Mom why she did not wake me and she said, "I decided to wait until
Friday and if you had not emerged by then, I was going to call the
Undertaker!" I replied, "Geee thanks Mom, like don't bother with the Doctor,
just pack me off still breathing!"

Water Beds

2006-11-15 14:32:00

waveless water bed, too. Let me know if you
Just had to pop in here. Doctors told me years ago to get one of three
things: 1. Water Bed, 2. Whirlpool (hot tub) or 3. Heated swimming pool.
Well cost constraints prevented anything but the waterbed and I have never
turned back since. I love my waterbed and don't think I could sleep well
without it. In fact, I went visiting a few years ago and slept on a
"regular" bed and almost could not get out of it the next morning. I was so
stiff and sore and didn't sleep and tossed and turned forever it seemed
like. So I have to put in a PLUS for the water bed set at 99 degrees for
me. At least when I wake up I'm not stiff. Don't have as many flareups of
the sciatica either come to think about it. Course the other thing I gave
up was the straight shift vehicle - went to automatic. That helped a lot
with the back and legs.
So that's my two cents. Anybody else?

the minority when I said that a water bed caused me more pain..MUCH more. It
was the heat. Heat aggravates joints, my hips especially. I avoid soaking in a
hot tub for that reason, and I find that heated pools cause me grief. But most
people seem to find water beds good. I would think that a water bed would be
good for most people. But I do miss the comfort of the gentle firmness. It was
one of those waveless, with the fibre filled coils. It was a PAIN to drain!!!

Hey, I can totally relate to having a dog and the responsibility that comes with
it. Leaving my two dogs and two cats for so long would not be possible if it
were not for my parents. The dogs and cats know them as well as my husband and
I so my folks move into the house while we are gone. But there are plenty of
times that I turn down opportunities to get away for retreats and what not,
because of the dogs. In fact, if it were not for all of our creatures, I would
be in Ireland full-time with my husband. I would never consider asking my
parents taking care of them that much. I think two months is about
enough..sometimes I think I am even asking too much of them already!
Did I ask you before where you were in Ireland? I have deleted all messages and
have nothing recent or aged.
But hey, it sounds like meeting is not something you are interested in, so that
is ok. It's just not very often that you get to meet someone you talk to
online, so I thought it would be neat..but that's ok if you would rather not.
Ciao for now!

Work

2006-11-13 20:17:02

apologies but I deleted the page re employment and I think it was Steve that
originated the e mail..
My experiences I will be very short so as not to bore everyone ( anyone who
wants any more details just ask Gillian!!!!!)
I was working in the UK for a large multi national oil company and was
transfered to work in france to join my wife and new baby at my request
afetr a lot of my hard work but I had to resign from the UK company and join
the French one..after my initial 2 month trial they terminated my contract
as I had to wear the company uniform(short sleeves)and people could see my P
and as i was managing a modern petrol station that also served snacks and
coffee and occasionally during the busy periods I would man the coffee
machine. my P would put people off their food if my skin was to drop off. As
I was under my 2 month trial there was no comeback....
I will not slag off the company but I now boycott them.
Take care
David

Working Again

2006-11-13 11:08:15

Hi BJ
Well I have not worked since I landed here in 1992.
However, I did attend a College Course, a "Simulated Enterprise" or Company
on paper only.
The concept is to allow unemployed people a insight into how Companies are
run. We had a Board of Directors, our Tutor was the in house Director so we
reported to him. The classroom was set out, Personnel Department, Purchasing
Department, Sales Department, Marketing Department and Finance Department.
We were part of the European Network, had our own Central Bank and 'traded'
with other Simulated Companies across Europe. We had to issue a catalogue,
price the items up, arrange stock control, you name it we did it.
I was in charge of the Finance Department, as that was my real job before I
landed here. Was it tough going? YES! Some students did not own a Bank
Account let alone know how to write a cheque out. Other students could not
calculate VAT and two students could not read or write.
As you would find in the REAL world, office hours were 9.30am to 4.30pm with
one hour for lunch!
I survived the first week, but asked if I could cut my hours, arrive at
10am. That then ended up being 10.30am, although by 4.30pm I was still at
the desk and stayed until 5pm or 5.30pm. The early morning were my difficult
hours. During the two year course, I ended up in hospital twice, where the
student brought me in the Simulated Companies books to do! Honest! Yes they
really took this course seriously.
When I had problems and I did, the students were more than willing to offer
assistance.
However I realised that my PA did not enjoy full time employment. The course
was a real insight into how the PA would cope, so now I am aiming for a part
time position, should one become available.
I believe I could work from say 2pm to 8pm every OTHER day, but trying to
locate a job where one can have flexible hours, well that flexibility is new
to Ireland. Still I have not given up.
Love and God Bless
Gillian

Voice

2006-11-13 08:58:35

Hi All
I know I reside outside USA, but I am sure you can all avail of "Voice Pro".
This is a computer program which allows you to speak your e-mails or
letters. So if the hands are not working, or the key board is to tough to
use, you do not have to worry about typing. You just put the headset on and
dictate your information, the words appear on the screen. The more you use
it, the more it becomes accustomed to your voice, the faster it becomes.
From my knowledge keyboards will soon be a thing of the past. The PC of the
future will be voice activated, making it easier for abled and disabled
people to use.
Love and God Bless

2006-11-12 02:32:44

Hi! My name is Kelly. I'm new to this group and have enjoyed reading your posts
for the last week or so. Already I have gained a lot from your insights. I
have been having trouble with my heels and went to the sports store and bought
the heel supports that someone(I'm sorry to say I don't know who) suggested and
they have helped quite a bit. I'm also going to try the aspirin shampoo. My P
is only on my scalp and two toenails so far. Does anyone have any suggestions
for nail psoraisis? For the PA. I get an 20 mg injection of MTX every week. I
started oral MTX last Sept but switched to the injections at the beginning of
Dec. It is helping but is not the cure-all I thought it would be. Still
hobbling around and having pain in one shoulder, though my back and hip have
settled down. I'm also taking prednisone still and hope to get off it soon.
Again, I think this group is great and I really am glad to be a part of it!
Take care, Kelly

[RE]Happy Birthday!

2006-11-11 14:06:47

To Gillian.
I liked this mail VERY much and it has given me this
idea:
I spend every day more than an hour in my casita
(guest house) where I enjoy my (sometimes messy)
hobbies. From now on my PA has been prohibited
entrance to the casita! I know he is a persistant and
irritating so-and-so but let's see who can win out for
a short time a day; he or my mind!
Bets can be placed with my booky Ms G. Rowe in Ireland.
Greetings.
Margaretha.

Young PA'ers

2006-11-08 07:57:09

Hi Alison and Sylvia
I know it is a worry over loosing the ACTIVE stages to your lives. You will
both learn that you will be able to continue certain physical activities,
providing you save the energy before hand. I call it charging my Battery!
Before I go out dancing with the local Recycled Teenagers, I have a few days
of preparation to conserve my energy levels. I leave all the housework alone
and just read a book of watch television. I then have the extra energy to
use for the night out. It is akin to a Time and Motion Study on yourself.
Knowing what you want to do, planning what you want to do, saving energy for
what you want to do and then giving it hell when you do it!
Like any habit in life, this planning of using energy wisely also becomes a
habit. Its tough to get a handle on it to begin with, but once you climbed
the mountain, you know the trail to follow!
Yes your legs feel like you have run a Marathon and as you correctly pointed
out, 'but it was worth it'.
I come in from the night out my legs feel like jelly, not able to support
me, but it was worth it!
And in my book, if it is worth it, than that is all that matters.
You will soon learn to pick and choose what is worth it in your book. I like
to walk Hermes, so would rather do that then say go to the Disco Friday
night. I enjoy listening to music, although Mom always complains at the
LOUDNESS, so if I get the vacuum cleaner out, do the housework TO music, Mom
is happy, I am happy and the house is clean!
Your worries over the future activity will sort themselves out, once you do
your own Time and Motion Study!
Love and God Bless
Gillian
